Separation Runway Calculator

When you separate, tax-free BAH and BAS and near-free TRICARE end, and the next paycheck may not be lined up. This counts how many months your cash survives at civilian prices, including the healthcare cliff when free transitional coverage ends.

Separation Runway

If you separate without a job lined up, how long does your cash last at civilian prices? This counts the months, including the healthcare cliff.

TAMP keeps healthcare free for the first six months, then it steps up. That cliff is the cost most people forget to plan for.

A burn-rate estimate, not a budget. TAMP is 180 days of premium-free TRICARE, but mostly for involuntary separations; a voluntary ETS may get none. Sold-back leave is capped at 60 days over a career, paid at basic pay only, and taxed. Verify your specifics with transition counseling.

How to use this calculator

  1. Enter your cash on handWhat you can actually draw on with no paycheck coming in.
  2. Enter your monthly civilian expensesAt civilian prices, since tax-free BAH and BAS end at separation.
  3. Read your runway in monthsWith the day-180 cliff when free transitional TRICARE coverage ends.

Most people leaving the service do it without a confirmed next job, and the safety net changes overnight: no more tax-free housing and food, and TRICARE winds down. The right question is not how to split a budget but how many months your savings last with no paycheck. This is a burn-rate estimate, with the day-180 healthcare cliff built in.

◆ Frequently Asked Questions

What is a separation runway?

It is how many months your savings can cover your expenses with no paycheck coming in. When you separate, tax-free BAH and BAS end and you pay civilian prices, so the useful question is how long your cash lasts, not how to split a budget.

What is the day-180 healthcare cliff?

Free transitional TRICARE coverage runs for a limited time after separation, often about 180 days. After it ends you either pay for continued coverage or find civilian insurance, which raises your monthly cost. The calculator builds that jump into your runway.

What should I do before I separate?

Build more cash and lower your expenses ahead of time, and have a realistic civilian budget. The longer your runway, the more room you have to find the right next job instead of the first one.
